In an attempt to conduct research, I and a few friends flew across the country, rented a car and proceed to drive. We visited a number of 10th and 11th century Georgian churches, hiked some mountains, and ate some amazing food. Here are a few photos to prove it.
Still awesome.
Monastery turned mosque. Small chapel now used to house firewood.
Fire in a ruined church.
Never gets old!
Something is missing?
Lovely as always!
Impressed yet?
Some fun figures.
We took a break from driving to scoot across a river...
Trying to capture the mountains while driving.
Bana Cathedral. Unusual, and half buried!
Picnicers (breaking bread).
The damn that will flood the valley. They claim no churches will be lost.
Tekke Kale.
Dortkilise. Remote, yet lovely!
Dolishane + Emrah.
Just some pretty mountains.
The castle we all wanted to climb. Too bad it was across a river.
2 km straight up a mountain and we found the Khantza Monastery.
Forget Georgian churches, time to look at an Armenian church!
Campaign season?
We made it to Ani!!
Who knew city defensive walls were so complex/ lovely?
Terribly reconstructed Seljuk palace.
Accidental cross section....
Still impressive. Never gets old.
Armenia on the left, Turkey on the right.
Beautiful and eclectic ceiling of a church turned caravanseray.
This is not the typical facade of a church- more like a caravanseray. In this case, both?!
A close up with an Armenian inscription
Small church @ Ani
