Sixth century church of the Jvari Monastery.
View from the church of the old Georgian capital, Mtskheta.
Bell tower and the class with which I tagged along.
Thirteenth century facade.
The next church was nestled amongst these hills.
Heavy scaffolding for the restoration of the frescos.
Oh, yes, we were allowed to climb the scaffolding. Who cares about being scared of heights?
A few frescos up close and personal (flash not allowed, please excuse the lighting).
Evidence of iconoclasm (the etched cross).
Ancient city carved from the rock. Inhabited between the first century BCE to the thirteenth century CE.
You might notice my obsession with the surrounding landscape...
...and the obsession of the carvers with creating the ornate ceilings!
Another church, I believe from the eleventh century. Notice the odd, inward-slopping walls of the dome.
Remember the first church? This is Djvari from below.
Losing light! This used to be the main church of Georgia, located in Mtskheta.
Rooster for scale!
These guys have been holding up this window for a long time!
The architect lost his arm!
I enjoyed the miniature buildings that adorned the various roof lines.
The interior.
