Well here I am

I have left Bodrum and Burcu and am now residing in the Kiwi Pension in Selcuk. For being the hub for Efeses, the burial ground of St John, the house of the Virgin yada yada yada, its a fairly small place. Tomorrow the plan is to see Efeses, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. The next day will be Pammakale, a healing ground full of calium rich pools and another set of ruins. Its amazing the ruins here, i mean really they are just lying about in some ones backyard, or in the middle of a street. I am starting to understand how the locals must take them more or less for granted. Although I enjoyed the great hospitality and company from all those I have been with, its rather nice to move to my own schedule now. Dont get me wrong, I enjoyed all that has come before, but now it is nice to nap whenever, wander wherever, and not have to agree on a meal.
Anyway, today I visited the Basillica of St John. Never thought I would see the 'burial place' of such a religous figure. It was utterly bizarre to stand at such a monumental place and realizing just how much religious background I am lacking. The ruins of the basillica were massive and it is speculated that had the terrain upon which it was built been larger and more level, the basillica itself would have been larger. It had a timber roof, six domes, and like many basillicas in this country was converted to a mosque. It is said that in its prime it was to be one of the most slendiforous churches in the world. That aside, one set of mosaics and a small bit of frescos remain.
Anyway time to mingle with the folks here.
More tomorrow on this Efeses place.
