As some readers might know, within the next two weeks I will find myself back in Asia, only this time we are talking Asia Minor (and a little bit of Europe). On June 26th at approximately 1:35pm (given that flights are on time) I will set foot in Turkey and thus begin my adventure of the next 9 weeks. This trip will be defined primarily by my interactions with an elderly women (estimated age 81) as I accompany her on her 43ft sloop. The details I know are few. I know that Patricia Landamore does exist, a simple Google search of her name lead me to this:
"I'm OK. Life raft very comfortable."
-- 71-year-old British boater Patricia Landamore in a message to her son after being rescued from her sinking yacht in the South Pacific by a British family in another luxury yacht. (http://www.salon.com/people/col/reit/1999/05/26/menace/)
Trish (as she prefers to be called) has suggested that whenever we dock in port that I travel inland for a bit to explore and get to know Turkey, meanwhile she will wait for my return. Our correspondence has led me to believe that she is a laid back woman who gets along well with just about anyone. However, I have been strictly advised by a reference never to talk politics with my hostess. Alas, I suppose this will force me to suppress my American belief that Obama is God incarnate.
Our course is pretty rough. As far as I know she aims to sail westward along the Turkish coast, taking time to visit ports, market places and engage in the occasional snorkeling.
Other potential highlights of the trip will include seeing various Turkish exchange students encountered throughout high school, possibly seeing my parents outside the US, couch surfing, food, and of course the great historical monuments I have studied for so long, especially the Hagia Sophia.
Again, I will attempt to upload images, but the pending results are subject to the quality of the given Internet connection. Stories and documentation of my travels will definitely be retold here as this site not only serves to inform family and friends of my whereabouts, but my personal travel log as well.
Well, so long for now and the next time I will write will be from somewhere East of Troy and West of Mesopotamia.
